August 28, 2013 ~ Telegraph Harbour to Ganges

The weather forecasts from several different sources all agreed that it was going to rain today, so we were pleasantly surprised that the skies were fairly clear come morning – some clearing, lots of clouds, but no rain clouds.  We decided that we’d make a run for Ganges to see if we could get there before the rains came.

We got underway around 9:30 or so and headed out in calm water.  Our route does a bit of a zig zag after clearing Tent Island so we can pass along the eastern shore of Saltspring Island.  Visually it appears as though there would be plenty of room to pass between Kuper Island and Tent Island for a shortcut over to Saltspring, but that expanse of water is only a foot or two deep – the long way around is definitely the only way around.  As we cruised past Fernwood Point we commented about the long pier and dock that has been there for years.  We’ve never stopped there but have read about a small store there.  There was a boat there, and we saw a person walking back towards it on the pier, possibly carrying some groceries or supplies.

The rest of our cruise was uneventful, although we did encounter a couple of dolphins surfacing as we rounded Nose Point.  They weren’t interested in chasing us, though, and continued on their own way. 

We arrived at Ganges around 12:30, hoping for a spot on the government dock.  These docks are closer to town than either of the commercial marinas, and would make it especially convenient for Ray and Mary to stroll into town at their leisure.  There was no room, even at the breakwater, so we anchored nearby.  Usually there is quite a bit of turnover as the afternoon progresses, but that didn’t happen today so we’re just spending

the night here at anchor.  We’ll be ready to take a spot in the morning.

This evening we played dominoes for a couple of hours, and the game is to be continued.
